DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

HazingPrevention.Org Position Description

Service to HPO
Oversees development and implementation of the fundraising plan; identifies and solicits funds from external sources of support; reviews major grants and associated terms.

Position Impact
Members of the fundraising and development committee will serve HPO by procuring financial gifts, grant funding and sponsorships which are necessary for the enactment of the organization’s programs and services and the fulfillment of the organization’s mission. The mission of HPO is “Empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university environments to foster a more developmental student experience within groups."

Duties

  • Individuals should make at least 10 “asks” (requests) to organizations or individuals for either direct gifts or sponsorship opportunities for HPO. Contact information for donor and sponsor prospects will be provided for volunteers; however, volunteers are not limited to these prospects.
  • Communicate about all meetings with prospective donors or sponsors, including any needs, concerns, or questions, to the Development Chair.
  • Provide training and support for the governing board to conduct development activities.
  • Provide assistance and leadership in identifying and applying for grant funding for HPO.
  • Complete other duties as determined in partnership with the governing board and Executive Director.

Qualifications and Skills
Members of this committee should have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Experience in the development field, or with fundraising and soliciting for not-for-profit organizations;
  • Knowledge or experience in applying for grants;
  • Sales experience, specific to gaining sponsorship support;
  • A belief in the mission and values of HPO.

Benefits
Members will be able to network within the athletic, educational, fraternity/sorority, and broad fundraising communities, and advance fundraising skills. These skills likely carry over into other organizations with which a person is affiliated.

Supervision & Support
The Chair provides supervision and support. The Executive Director will support the committee and provide information as needed.

Training for HPO Committee positions is conducted annually each fall or as needed for new volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will provide training through a required one-hour required volunteer training session. The Development Chair will provide additional training on fundraising specifically for HPO.

Required Commitment
Members are appointed for one calendar year. Members of this committee can expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours per month on the group’s activities. There may be some times of the year that are busier than others. Members will be asked to participate in quarterly conference calls with the committee chair as well as monthly email communication. Additional communication may be needed depending on the project load. Because of the nature of the committee, members are expected to contribute financially to HPO as able. Donations can be made via www.hazingprevention.org. Members may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs.

Reporting
Committee members will report to the committee chair, which reports to the Board. The chair will develop an annual Project Plan (goals), and provide quarterly status reports.

"For a sponsoring organization to truly maximize its return on investment, I strongly encourage having a staff member serve as a volunteer for HPO. Learning and networking with colleagues, many of whom I may not have worked with otherwise, through my service as a HPO volunteer has made me more effective in my position as Director of Risk Reduction for Sigma Nu Fraternity."
