HazingPrevention.Org Position Description
Service to HPO Ensures effective Board processes, structures and roles, including retreat planning, committee development, and Board evaluation. Identifies and recruits potential Board members and develops orientation and training for new members with the assistance of the Volunteer Coordinator.
Position Impact The Governing and Nominating Committee works to ensure effective Board processes, structures and roles and advances the mission of HPO by promoting organizational stability and smooth transition in leadership. The mission of HPO is “Empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university environments to foster a more developmental student experience within groups.”
Duties
- Recruit strong volunteers including committee and board members.
- Create a plan for orientation and training of new volunteers and board members, and insure they have the tools and information needed to perform the duties of their positions.
- Work with the Volunteer Coordinator, Executive Director and Board Chair to develop and update, as necessary, governing documents to guide the organization.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of board retreats for planning or other purposes.
- Develop Board evaluation tools and processes.
- Complete other duties as determined in partnership with the governing board and Executive Director.
Qualifications and Skills Members of this committee should have some or all of the following characteristics:
- Experience with organizational development and governance;
- Ability to see the big picture of the organization and how the various components work together;
- Interest in strategic planning and processes;
- Established professional and personal networks that will help them identify a variety of potential qualified committee/board members.
Benefits Committee members learn the art of governing, including writing and amending governing documents and policies. They also learn recruiting, training and evaluation of Board members who lead the work of HazingPrevention.Org. These skills likely carry over into other organizations with which a person is affiliated.
Supervision & Support The Chair provides supervision and support. The Executive Director will support the committee and provide information as needed.
Training for HPO Committee positions is conducted annually each fall or as needed for new volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will provide training through a required one-hour required volunteer training session. The Governing and Nominating Chair will provide additional training on policies, procedures, and practices specific to HPO.
Required Commitment Members are appointed for one calendar year. Members of this committee can expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours per month on the group’s activities. There may be some times of the year that are busier than others. Members will be asked to participate in quarterly conference calls with the committee chair as well as monthly email communication. Additional communication may be needed depending on the project load. Committee members are encouraged to contribute financially to HPO as able. Donations can be made via www.hazingprevention.org. Members may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs.
Reporting Committee members will report to the committee chair, which reports to the Board. The chair will develop an annual Project Plan (goals), and provide quarterly status reports.
