AWARD & ESSAY SELECTION COMMITTEES

HazingPrevention.Org Position Description

Service to HPO
Oversees for all programs and projects involving contests the selection process for awards and recognition.

Position Impact
The Award and Essay Selection Committee oversees all programs and projects involving contests and the selection process for awards and recognition such as annual award and contest winners. The Award & Essay Selection Committees advance the mission of HPO through the promotion of awards and the subsequent selection of winners in all contest entries, awards and selection processes. The mission of HPO is “Empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university environments to foster a more developmental student experience within groups."

Duties

  • Responsible for choosing winners through an established scoring and selection process. When possible, sponsoring organizations for the awards/contests will have representation on the committee.
  • Remain active throughout the year to help the organization publicize the winners of the current year’s awards/contests, and also to promote the opportunities for the following year.
  • Complete other duties as determined in partnership with the governing board and Executive Director.

Qualifications and Skills
Members of this committee should have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Strong analytical skills to read and judge nominations fairly;
  • Communication skills to work with fellow committee members and promote opportunities widely; and
  • Marketing and public relations skills to effectively recognize and publicize award/contest winners.

Benefits
Committee members learn how to review, analyze, rank and select contest entries and winners. They learn how to publicize the winners and bring needed attention to the issue of hazing. These skills and lessons likely carry over into other organizations with which a person is affiliated.

Supervision & Support
The Chair provides supervision and support. The Executive Director will support the committee and provide information as needed.

Training for HPO Committee positions is conducted annually each fall or as needed for new volunteers. The Awards and Essay Chair will provide additional training specific to the position. The Volunteer Coordinator will provide training through a required one-hour required volunteer training session.

Required Commitment
Members are appointed for one calendar year. Members of this committee can expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours per month on the group’s activities. There may be some times of the year that are busier than others. This committee is most active in the early fall when nominations for the award/contests are submitted. Members of this committee can expect to spend approximately 6-10 hours during the months of September/October. Members will be asked to participate in quarterly conference calls with the committee chair as well as monthly email communication. Additional communication may be needed depending on the project load. Committee Members are encouraged to contribute financially to HPO as able. Donations can be made via www.hazingprevention.org. Members may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs.

Reporting
Committee members will report to the committee chair, which reports to the Board. The chair will develop an annual Project Plan (goals), and provide quarterly status reports.

"For a sponsoring organization to truly maximize its return on investment, I strongly encourage having a staff member serve as a volunteer for HPO. Learning and networking with colleagues, many of whom I may not have worked with otherwise, through my service as a HPO volunteer has made me more effective in my position as Director of Risk Reduction for Sigma Nu Fraternity."
