HazingPrevention.Org Position Description
Service to HPO The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to identify the complexity of the hazing phenomenon and provides education on prevention strategies. Program outcomes include developing a strategy to decrease risk and harm associated with hazing, discovering the real problem behind hazing behaviors, and identifying contributing factors to hazing. The programs of HazingPrevention.Org shall be those that address the mission of the organization as approved by the Board of Directors.
Position Impact This committee is integral to the creation of a quality program that trains a diverse group of participants on an annual basis. Program outcomes include developing a strategy to decrease risk and harm associated with hazing, discovering the real problem behind hazing behaviors, and identifying contributing factors to hazing. People from across the country attend the Institute and allows HPO to advance its mission “Empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university environments to foster a more developmental student experience within groups."
Duties
- Support marketing efforts for the annual institute.
- Assist with coordination of logistics for the institute.
- Develop program materials for the institute including notebook layout and design as well as supplemental materials design.
- Participate in the implementation of the institute as needed to include potential support of onsite arrangements.
- Aid in all institute matters as directed by the lead faculty and the chair.
- Partner with the Programming Committee liaison.
- Complete other duties as determined in partnership with the governing board and Executive Director.
Qualifications and Skills Members of this committee should have some or all of the following characteristics:
- Experience with curriculum development for professionals;
- A strong understanding of hazing-related issues and the implications of hazing for a broad cross-section of stakeholders;
- A basic level of knowledge about hosting large-scale educational experiences including issues of logistics and materials development.
Benefits Committee members will learn organizational skills and will gain insight into the latest approaches to education on hazing prevention and strategies in risk reduction. These skills and lessons likely carry over into other organizations with which a person is affiliated.
Supervision & Support The Chair provides supervision and support. The Executive Director will support the committee and provide information as needed.
Training for HPO Committee positions is conducted annually each fall or as needed for new volunteers. Volunteer Coordinator will provide training through a required one-hour required volunteer training session. The Chair will provide additional training specific to the position.
Required Commitment Members are appointed for one calendar year. Members of this committee can expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours per month on the group’s activities. There may be some times of the year that are busier than others. Members will be asked to participate in quarterly conference calls with the committee chair as well as monthly email communication. Additional communication may be needed depending on the project load. Participation in the Institute is encouraged. Committee Members are encouraged to contribute financially to HPO as able. Donations can be made via www.hazingprevention.org. Members may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs, specifically the Institute.
Reporting Committee members will report to the committee chair, which reports to the Board. The chair will develop an annual Project Plan (goals), and provide quarterly status reports.
