HazingPrevention.Org Position Description
Service to HPO The Publications Editor works with the Editorial Board to provide information about HPO’s resources and services to constituents through its publications, most notably the organization’s newsletter.
Position Impact The Publications Editor edits and publishes the various publications of HazingPrevention.Org at the direction of the Executive Director.
The Publications Editor plays an important role in providing information about the non-profit’s resources and services to constituents through content in numerous resources, most notably the monthly newsletter. This person creates all publications with an intent to advance the mission of HPO. The mission of HPO is “Empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university environments to foster a more developmental student experience within groups."
Duties
- Oversee the content and quality of HPO’s monthly electronic newsletters.
- Work with Executive Director as outlined in the Marketing Plan to ensure successful production of the newsletter and sponsor communication.
- Maintain contact with people who have submitted articles and those who have inquired about article submissions. Work with people to edit and revise as necessary.
- Recruit submissions for all publications as necessary.
- Manage HPO Editorial Board and provide ongoing feedback to and effectively utilize the Editorial Board through email and phone correspondence, conference calls as needed.
- Act as a liaison between the editorial board and authors.
- Complete other duties as determined in partnership with the governing board and Executive Director.
Qualifications and Skills The Editor should have some or all of the following characteristics:
- Prior editing and publication experience, preferably with a background in journalism or mass communications; and
- Prior service on the Editorial Board is preferred.
Benefits The Editor keeps abreast of current issues and events related to hazing, makes contact with constituents, board members and volunteers, learns effective management and delegation skills, gains valuable editing and production skills, and has the satisfaction of having a tangible product to reflect efforts of Editor and Editorial Board. These skills and lessons likely carry over into other organizations with which a person is affiliated.
Supervision & Support The Board and Executive Director provides supervision and support. The Executive Director will work closely with the Editor.
Training for HPO positions is conducted annually each fall or as needed for new volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will provide training through a required one-hour required volunteer training session. The Executive Director will provide ongoing development as needed.
Required Commitment The Editor position is a two-year appointment. The Editor can expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours per month on HPO activities. There may be some times of the month that are busier than others. The Editor will coordinate calls as necessary with the Editorial Board. The Editor is encouraged to contribute financially to HPO as able. Donations can be made via www.hazingprevention.org. Members may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs. The Editor may be asked and are encouraged to attend and participate in HPO programs.
Reporting The Editor will report to the Executive Director. The Editor will develop an annual Project Plan (goals), and provide quarterly status reports. They will involved the Editorial Board in the development of such documents.
