What Is It?
National Hazing Prevention week is an opportunity for campuses, schools, communities, organizations, and individuals to promote the prevention of hazing. It is observed during the last week of September each year or whenever it is most convenient in your calendar. For each group or person, the experience is their own, but the important thing is that we are doing something to prevent hazing!
Utilizing a national awareness week is a great way to bring attention to the problem of hazing. This week allows us to educate parents, faculty and staff, community members, local and campus police, and others so that they can more easily recognize hazing. More importantly, they can have the knowledge and skills to intervene when hazing occurs. This week should be one part of an overall, year-round hazing prevention plan in your community. To learn more about comprehensive prevention planning, read Linda Langford’s paper on the topic.
The ultimate goal is to prevent hazing from happening in the first place! Through strong educational efforts, diligent policy reinforcement, and comprehensive and ongoing community efforts, we can accomplish that goal!
What Happens?
Activities range from brown-bag lunch discussions among faculty to movie or book discussions with students. There have been training sessions for organizational leaders and team leaders, as well as signing of anti-hazing pledges. Some campuses host individual events and others plan an entire week of activities and programs.
Campuses and organizations have hosted a variety of events in order to bring attention to the problem and to prevent hazing in their communities. For more information on previous events held, visit our National Hazing Prevention Week Catalogue of Events.
If you observed National Hazing Prevention Week in 2012, tell us what you did. If you plan to observe National Hazing Prevention Week in 2013, tell us what you plan on doing and when it will happen.
